The AI – Authority problem

Millions of people use AI search every day, but your brand doesn't show up.

According to 2026 data, AI-referred traffic converts 5 times better than SEO and paid traffic.

If your company doesn’t get recommended by AI, you’re losing out on significant revenue.

In most cases, this isn’t due to bad content. It’s due to a lack of clear positioning and authority.

Solutions

It's time to make AI recommend your business.

AI models don’t just recommend brands because of great content and technical SEO.

They recommend brands that appear in the sources they trust: top-tier publications, niche blogs, social media discourse, and review sites.

This is fundamentally an authority problem. And we’ve spent the last 8 years solving it.

The Snapshot

Should I care about GEO and AI visibility in 2026?

Find out if your brand needs to work on AI visibility in 2026 and beyond.

GEO, or Generative Engine Optimization, is the practice of optimizing your brand to be discovered, understood, and recommended by AI platforms like ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Google’s AI Overviews.

AEO, or Answer Engine Optimization, is a closely related discipline (sometimes even used interchangeably) that specifically targets inclusion in direct-answer formats — featured snippets, voice assistant responses, and AI-generated summaries. Think of AEO as a subset of GEO focused on answer boxes and voice search.

AI visibility refers to how often and how prominently your brand appears when people use AI tools to research products, services, or topics in your industry. Today, when someone asks ChatGPT “What’s the best [your category] company?”, AI visibility determines whether your brand is in that answer — or invisible.

According to Gartner, traditional search engine volume is projected to drop 25% by 2026 as users shift to AI assistants. The brands that optimize for AI visibility now will capture demand that traditional SEO can no longer reach. And this is just the start of the trend.

  • ChatGPT has over 900 million weekly active users as of early 2026, more than doubling from 400 million in February 2025. It processes approximately 2.5 billion prompts per day and receives over 5.7 billion monthly visits, making it the 5th most visited website globally. (Backlinko; DemandSage; Superlines)
  • Google Gemini has approximately 450 million monthly active users, boosted by its integration with Google Workspace and Android devices. Google’s AI Overviews now reach 1.5 billion monthly users. (Search Engine Land, January 2026)
  • Perplexity has over 22 million monthly active users, with 30% of its users in senior leadership roles and 65% in high-income white-collar professions — making it an outsized influence on B2B purchasing decisions. (Exposure Ninja, 2026)
  • Claude (Anthropic) has approximately 20 million monthly users and captured 32% of enterprise LLM usage market share as of mid-2025. (Incremys, 2026; Viola Eva/LinkedIn)

In total, AI assistants now serve billions of queries daily across consumer and enterprise use cases. Adobe’s research shows AI-driven visit share has grown at a rate of 1,151% over the past 18 months. For context, 92% of Fortune 500 companies now use ChatGPT in some capacity.

Important: these numbers are expected to grow the course of 2026 and beyond.

AI search is not replacing Google overnight, but it is rapidly capturing the highest-value research and discovery queries:

AI referral traffic is exploding. According to Adobe, AI-driven traffic to retail websites surged 693% year-over-year during the 2025 holiday season. AI platforms generated 1.13 billion referral visits in June 2025 alone, a 357% increase from the prior year. (Adobe Digital Insights; Superlines)

Crucially, AI traffic converts dramatically better. Visitors arriving from AI platforms convert at 14.2% compared to Google’s 2.8% — roughly 5x higher. Some studies show AI traffic converting up to 23x better than traditional organic in certain categories. AI-referred visitors also spend 68% more time on websites and generate 12% more page views than non-AI traffic. (Exposure Ninja; Ahrefs/Passionfruit; SE Ranking)

Google itself is becoming an AI answer engine. Google’s AI Overviews now appear in approximately 25% of all searches (up from 6.5% in January 2025). When AI Overviews appear, organic click-through rates for the #1 position drop by 58%. In Google’s experimental AI Mode, the zero-click rate reaches 93% — meaning virtually no one clicks through to a website. (Conductor 2026; Ahrefs, February 2026; Semrush, September 2025)

ChatGPT.com now receives more monthly visits than Bing. Google’s search market share dropped below 90% for the first time since 2015. ChatGPT alone accounts for 80%+ of the AI chatbot market, with its traffic growing nearly 50% year-over-year. (SimilarWeb; Onely)

As of Q1 2026, that’s a clear no. Current data puts referrals from Google still at beyond 70% for most businesses. That said, the wind is changing, and it’s changing fast.

Organic clicks are declining. Nearly 60% of all searches now end without a single click to any website. When AI Overviews are present, that number jumps to 83%. (Search Engine Land; Similarweb; Click-Vision)

But organic search still matters — it’s just not enough anymore. Organic search still produces roughly 33% of overall website traffic across key industries. The channel isn’t dead — it’s fragmenting. (Search Engine Land, January 2026; Conductor 2025)

The winners are doing both SEO and GEO. Brands cited in Google’s AI Overviews earn 35% more organic clicks and 91% more paid clicks compared to those not cited. The data shows that appearing in AI answers actually boosts traditional click-through rates. (Seer Interactive, September 2025; Dataslayer)

The real shift is this: SEO alone is no longer a complete strategy. Addiitonally, all signs point towards this trend intensifying across the next few years. The brands winning in 2026 and beyond combine traditional SEO with AI visibility optimization, treating GEO not as a replacement for SEO but as the essential second layer that captures the growing share of discovery happening through AI.

The short answer: all of them — but in different ways. There are two forces at work. The first is Google's AI Overviews, which now appear in roughly 25% of all searches and steal clicks before users ever reach a website. These hit hardest in health (where AI Overviews appear on up to 82.5% of queries), technology, science, and electronics. In these sectors, informational content has seen organic traffic drops of 40–70%. (Semrush, December 2025; SE Ranking, 2025)

The second force is direct LLM usage — people going straight to ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude to ask for recommendations. This affects virtually every industry, including ones where AI Overviews barely show up. According to Forrester, 9 in 10 B2B buyers have already adopted generative AI for vendor research, and 95% expect to use it for purchasing decisions within the next year. In local services — lawyers, restaurants, medical practices, tradespeople — people are asking ChatGPT "best personal injury lawyer in [city]" right now. ChatGPT pulls these recommendations from review platforms, "Best Of" listicles, and local publications — not from Google Maps. (Forrester, 2024; Local Falcon, 2025; OptimizeMyFirm, 2025)

E-commerce and retail are not immune either. Adobe's data shows AI referral traffic to retail sites surged 693% year-over-year during the 2025 holiday season, with 38% of consumers already using AI assistants for shopping. Financial services saw 266% growth in the same period. (Adobe, 2025/2026)

Data shows that AI search traffic will become a primary channel. AI referral traffic currently accounts for roughly 1-2% of all website traffic, but it is growing approximately 1% month-over-month. Adobe projects AI-referred visitors will surpass traditional search visitors by 2028. With conversion rates 5-23x higher than organic search, even small traffic volumes generate outsized revenue impact. 54% of US marketers already plan to implement GEO within 3-6 months. (Conductor 2026; Exposure Ninja; eMarketer, January 2026)

AI agents will begin shopping and purchasing on behalf of users. Google launched its Universal Checkout Protocol in February 2026 with Etsy and Wayfair, allowing purchases without leaving AI Mode. McKinsey projects AI agents could mediate $3-5 trillion of global consumer commerce by 2030. Gartner predicts 40% of enterprise apps will include conversational AI agents by end of 2026. This means brands need to be optimized not just for human searchers but for AI agents making purchasing decisions. (Superlines; McKinsey; Gartner)

Brand authority will matter more than ever. According to Ahrefs, AI Overviews prefer websites with strong brand signals — brand mentions, branded searches, and third-party editorial coverage — more than ChatGPT and Perplexity do. In an AI-first world, the brands that earn real media authority (not just technical optimization) will dominate recommendations. This is why the convergence of PR and GEO is the most important development in marketing in 2026.
